Steps 2 Summit is a whole school program designed to improve the physical, social and mental health of primary aged children.
The program centres around children virtually climbing a mountain by transferring physical activity completed in school into progress towards the summit of some of the most iconic mountains in the world.

Each year group climbs a different mountain and has a full academic year to reach the summit, meaning by the end of their time your school, each child has explored every corner of the world and completed the schools Steps 2 Summit challenge. The challenges for each type of school are:
Primary Schools
The 7 Summit Challenge is designed for primary schools looking to embrace a whole school cross-curricular project.
It is based on a real life challenge, where mounaineers climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents around the world.
Our 7 Summit Challenge is no different - we are challenging children to join us on the adventure of a lifetime, increasing their fitness whilst nurturing their inner explorer!
Infant Schools
The Big Adventure takes infant explorers to some of the wildest parts of the earth and helps instil an early love and appreciation of exploration and adventure!
In Reception, we start by summiting Carstenz Pyramid in Oceania before heading to Antartica in year 1 to summit Vinson Massif.
From Antartica, it's off to the land of the rising sun in Year 2 to tackle Mount Fuji in Japan!
This really is a big adventure for all infant schools!
Junior Schools
Specifically designed for junior schools, the famous four challenges participants to virtually summit some of the most iconic mountains in the world.
From the highest free standing mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro, we head to Mont Blanc in the Alps. From there, it's to the world's second highest mountain, K2, before finally attempting the big one - Mount Everest.
This challenge will certainly get participants thinking BIG!
Each child's physical activity is simply recorded in the Steps 2 Summit system, giving you a clear and accurate record of how active every child is in your school. 4 simple methods are used to capture data:
Scanners
By issuing each child with their own, unique barcode which can be scanned at each completed lap of the school course, scanners allow young leaders and lunchtime staff to record any physical activity completed in lunch and playtimes.
Tablet/Phone
Class teachers can challenge their class to complete as many laps as possible in a set time. Each time a child completes a lap, you simply touch their name. Once the time is finished, mark the activity as completed and the correct number of laps will be added to each child's progress.
Mountain Hut Training Videos
Need a quick work out in the classroom or school hall? These 7 min HIIT videos allow children to get active in a confined space. They are perfect for wet breaks and when a brain break is needed in the classroom. Each completed video adds 1km progress up the mountain to each child that took part.
Whole Class Activity
If teachers decide to take their class out for a walk, the simplest way to record that data is by logging whole class activity. Simply select how many laps the class completed and de-select any children who didn't take part. Each child who completed the walk will be credited with the same progress up the mountain.
As children are getting more active in an attempt to reach the summit, the program also utilises the key skills developed in mountaineering to help nurture fundamental character skills in children. Through the summiteer skills lessons and classroom resources, children explore what it means to be a 'persevering pioneer', an 'honest explorer' and more.
"The lessons and assemblies that come with the Steps 2 Summit project have been really useful and have really enhanced the daily physical activity. For a couple of years, we have done daily activity but it sometimes loses its momentum but having the lessons and assemblies, keeps the message in their minds and keeps the project rolling plus giving the children something to aim for. They keep the project fresh in their minds and motivated to achieve their goals of climbing their virtual mountain."

Additionally, children learn about the area they are exploring through age relevant, curriculum based lessons that are included in the program. These lessons help children become more aware of the world around them and open their minds to the different cultures, climates and landscapes that the world has to offer.
